Brochs are circular towers which are unique to Scotland, thought to have been built between about 500 BC and 200 AD as the homes of chiefs - the forerunners of the later castles and tower-houses.
Their construction is very sophisticated, with hollow walls of drystone containing passages, openings and staircases.
Shown are two of the finest examples still existing today – Dun Carloway on the Isle of Lewis and Mousa, in the Shetland Islands.
